How to create great content for newsletters

You may already be well underway with your email marketing and Marketing Automation, but how do you create a newsletter/email? It can sometimes be difficult to figure out what to include in your newsletters to keep your recipients interested. It's beneficial to prepare and organize your approach to newsletters and constantly take note of what works and how. One thing you should always keep in mind is the target audience, as good newsletter content is something that provides value to customers. Here we share some of our favorite ways to get inspired to develop content and help you get started with your content plan.

Organize the process

To avoid getting stuck with your newsletters, it’s a good idea to get organized and put things in order first. Assign some responsibilities, such as who is the editor, writes the texts and sets things up technically. In addition, agree when you will meet – preferably at a fixed interval. Your inspiration can come from anywhere and from any industry. Save the things you come across that each of you find interesting in a catalog of ideas that you can browse through at the meetings and discuss and get inspiration from. During the meetings, you can brainstorm ideas for great newsletter content together. A brainstorm is a popular method to use. It’s a good idea if everyone has done an individual brainstorm before the joint one starts. That way, you have a starting point from which you can begin to brainstorm further. It’s important to be open to all suggestions and inputs in the beginning. Decide how much time you want to spend brainstorming and stay open throughout the agreed time. Then you can put on your “no hat” and give constructive criticism to each suggestion and begin a selection process.

Talk to the different departments - what do customers ask?

The departments in your company have a lot of different knowledge – both about your customers and what’s happening internally – and maybe there’s a good story worth writing about. Ask your employees what questions they typically encounter from customers so you can help them with them through the content of your emails. Also, invite different employees to your meetings as they might bring a new angle to the idea development process. Assign the task of writing a story/article to the employees who have dealt with the situation. It also gives the reader a better impression of who your company is.

The customer journey

Draw inspiration from your buyer personas’ consumer journey. What can you help them with and when? See here for inspiration for the different stages.

Educate your recipients

Share your knowledge and educate your recipients within your field and unique services. This can be done through “how-to” articles, tutorials, demos, and information about what your company can do for them. You can also provide more detailed information about a specific part of your service that may not be on your website. By sharing your expertise, you will build greater credibility around your business, and overall, this type of content will help your potential customers make a decision to purchase your product. To better understand who your target audience is, it is necessary to develop your buyer personas, which are nuanced descriptions of your ideal customers.

Internal news

Share news about your company that might interest your readers. This can include changes in opening hours, new employees, special offers, events, or lectures you are hosting. One of the advantages of emails is that people have subscribed themselves and therefore have an interest in your company. Make sure to keep your recipients updated on what your company is doing. This can include new/updated products, media appearances, webinars you are holding, or things you are doing for the local community.

Observe on Social Media

Your buyer personas share plenty of data about themselves on social media, which is a great source of inspiration. Take a look at their interests – maybe your company has something in common with them? What do they comment on, and what do those comments contain? Perhaps you can help address some of them. Also, check out your own social media platforms and seek inspiration in the comment sections. You can also choose to invite your customers to provide input on what they would like to know more about.

Keep an eye on your industry

You are likely already staying updated on industry news and what your competitors are up to. Actively engage with the news flow and create current, relevant content based on the latest industry news. Also, take a look at your competitors – maybe you can be inspired by their emails and do even better than them?

Newsjacking

It can be challenging to leverage sudden situations to your advantage. However, if you can develop content related to your business and a highly relevant news story, it can be worth it, as it captures people’s attention. Remember that the news should match your target audience’s interests and be relevant for you as the sender.

Fixed moments

A good way to get inspiration is by looking at a yearly calendar with significant days, events, etc., that take place. Also, consider your local area – maybe there is an event during the year that can inspire some content?
