Clubhouse is a relatively new and sound-based social media, which in that way differs from other social media. The app was launched mid 2020 and opened up for Denmark in January 2021. In the app, you can navigate between different “rooms”. You can create and host the rooms yourself and you can join other people’s rooms. You can take part in other people’s conversations (“talks”) or just listen in. If you want to participate in a conversation, you have to raise your digital hand. You can not go back and listen to a previous conversation, so if you missed a discussion, it is unfortunately too late.
The way you become a part of Clubhouse is a bit atypical. First, the app is only available on App Store for Apple users, while Android users do not have access to the app – yet. You will be able to find and download the app i App Store, but when you click to enter the app, you need to “show” your invitation to get further. In this way, Clubhouse lives up to its reputation as an exclusive club that only those invited can participate in. You can only become a part of Clubhouse if you receive an invitation. When you join Clubhouse, you automatically receive two invitations that you can choose to pass on to someone else. If you want more invitations, you have to ‘earn them’. For example, you can do this by actively participating in conversations and discussions and generally attending Clubhouse on a regular basis. Once you have sent out invitations, you can not withdraw them – so it is important to hand them out with care.

So far, the users are mainly people from the tech and entertainment industry. Clubhouse planned that the invite-only procedure is used to avoid a so-called ‘crash’ of the app – but they will soon open up to anyone and everyone. The number of users has rapidly increased in January and February, with the number rising to 6 million users. Therefore it is only a matter of time before everyone can participate.
It will be interesting to see if the hype around Clubhouse will lessen as soon as the invite-only function disappears, because that is to a large extent what caused a great interest in the app.
