1. Your customers are digital today

According to Statistics Denmark (Danmarks Statistik), 97% of all Danes have computer and internet access at home. In organizations, it has long been as close to 100% as you can get. Around 96% of all companies with at least 10 employees have their own website. Denmark is also at the top when it comes to e-commerce, setting new records month after month. However, the ability to make B2B online purchases is still lagging behind, with only around 27% of companies (varies greatly from region to region) having online purchasing, ordering or reservations on their website. The online store has become an essential sales channel alongside the physical store. The internet has made it easy to shop online and the closest competitors are increasingly foreign companies. More than 3.2 million people use social media, with Facebook being a particular hit in Denmark with 3.1 million Danish profiles. Over 50% of companies use social media for two or more purposes. Digital technology is evolving at an exponential rate and has a significant impact on how your customers behave. It is therefore clear that digital media cannot be overlooked or neglected if your business is to reach its customers.

2. Competitiveness

The digital marketing strategy makes the company more competitive. Are there new digital areas and sales channels to explore before your competitors get in on it? By working with the strategy, you can identify digital opportunities in the industry and create an online position for your business that is just as important as traditional positioning.

3. Agility

By having a digital marketing strategy that you work with in an agile way, your company is always ‘on top of things’ and will therefore be much more adaptable. Rapid change is essential today, and many times a trial and error approach, where you constantly test and adapt, can provide significant benefits. At the same time, your business will be prepared when a digital disruption occurs that directly impacts the value proposition of your product or service.

4. Consistent business

Customers increasingly find companies on digital media. A well-developed digital strategy ensures that it is the same company that the customer meets, regardless of which platform it may be on. Customers expect and want the same reception and service across media.

5. Integrated strategic (co-)working

By creating a digital marketing strategy, you ensure that your entire business is working towards the same goals. The digital strategy should be aligned with your company’s overall strategy. It therefore contributes to a streamlined way of working.

6.Focused efforts on platforms

Developing the strategy forces your company to consider on which platforms you should focus your efforts. This gives you the opportunity for a much more focused effort and eliminates wasted time on irrelevant platforms.

7. Defined work tasks

Without a digital marketing strategy, it’s difficult to define tasks and allocate the right resources related to digital. It’s much easier for your company to work with digital when you can delegate tasks and make digital marketing a regular part of your workday.

8. Measurement and optimization

When you work with your digital strategy, make sure you develop goals for your efforts (SMART goals). This allows you to measure your performance on an ongoing basis and constantly optimize towards the set goals.

9. Touchpoints and the user journey

A digital marketing strategy helps your business get a handle on your customers’ touchpoints – identifying the user journey and ensuring you meet them in the right places, in the right way and at the right time. The right timing is crucial for success.

10. Real-time marketing

Digital platforms mean that customers can come to you 24 hours a day and in all kinds of different situations. Without a strategy, it’s hard to meet customers’ needs when they want it.

We can think of many more reasons why digital marketing strategy is so important, but we believe the ones we’ve briefly outlined here are some of the most important. We’ve developed a practical guide on how to go about developing a great digital marketing strategy.
